Part of our September exhibition, “Domestic Materials”, featuring work by Jane Bowen
Porcelain and red clay sculpture
‘Domestic materials’ is rooted in both terracotta and porcelain, exploring contrasts of texture, fragility and strength. Through hand-building, throwing, press-moulding and slip casting, Jane show cases everyday materials such as cloth, cardboard, raffia and crocheted string. These familiar but overlooked elements highlight the hidden labour and quiet resilience of tose who weave, stich, and hold together the fabric of our communities.
The exhibition celebrates the “busy hands” that patch, mend and weave our world together. In giving form to the overlooked and the ordinary, Bowen invites us to pause, wonder and see the extraordinary hidden in the everyday.
